How To Clean and Tidy Your Office Desk In 4 Simple Steps

With the global health pandemic and the restrictions it placed upon so many of us, for so long, more and more people were either forced to work from home, or chose to. With restrictions easing in most countries now though, many people are opting to remain working from home, finding it to be safer and more convenient.

If you’re one of the many millions of people working from behind a desk at home, you’ll doubtless benefit from the following 4 simple house cleaning steps to keep your desk clean and tidy; helping to boost your concentration and productivity:

  1. Identify what doesn’t need to be on your desk

Consider if there are any items on your desk that don’t help you to carry out your job, and that are simply taking up space and gathering dust. If so, these can probably be moved elsewhere. If you’re not quite sure how to identify whether an item needs to stay or can be moved off of your desk, consider whether you’ve used it in the past 3 months; if not, you can move on to the step below.

  • Get rid of anything you don’t need

For all of the items that you might have identified in the step above, remove them and place them elsewhere, ideally inside a closet or box so that you’re not simply shifting the clutter – and the problem – elsewhere. Or, if any of the items can be disposed of, recycled or donated, do so as soon as possible.

  • Items you do need, should be organized

Ideally, following the steps above, your desk should be looking relatively uncluttered. Those items that remain should all be ones that you need and use regularly, and they should be organized in a way that makes them easily accessible, without taking over the entire workspace. If you have drawers, try to put as much as possible into them, as items on top of your desk will simply gather dust and distract you.

  • Dust it all and wipe it down

Take a microfiber cloth and wipe down every available surface with your favorite cleaning product. Take care to wipe your computer and any other electrical items with products especially designed for that purpose, as regular dusting products may harm them. The less desktop clutter you have, the quicker this process will be.

And there you have it; a spotless desk in 4 simple steps! To keep it that way, try not to let clutter build back up on your desk, and if you have a seriously grubby, dusty desk and want it cleaned quickly, ask your regular cleaning company to factor it in to their schedule.
